Speak to My Soul

This might be the toughest of Jenni's challenge prompts yet.
At least for me it's tough, because I love music. All of it.

It's so hard choosing 5 songs that speak to me or
bring back memories, because so many songs do that.

"Look After You"
by The Fray

Look After You by The Fray on Grooveshark

My husband and I danced to this song at our wedding. We both absolutely love The Fray. They are incredible musicians! My husband told me he loved me for the first time on an evening after seeing The Fray for the first time together. We've seen three of their concerts together. Once in Florida, once in Vail, and another time at Red Rocks.

I'm only sharing one song today, but maybe someday soon I'll share more!

Travel: America, I Love You

It's no secret that I absolutely love to travel and see the world. I've seen various countries, but I'm still fascinated by the diverse landscape and culture of my very own country. America! This country really is such a beautiful and amazing place. I love that you can find such a variety of different foods, lifestyles, traditions, and places to explore. All of this exists without even leaving the country. Amazing!

{ not only do I just love to travel, but I love spending time in airports almost as much }

It's without being said that many of my favorite blog posts involve our travels.
Here are a few of my favorite posts. I dug these up from the archives just for you!

{ just click on the links to read the entire post }

Soul Stirring Utah : If I've ever felt moved by the land, it was during our drive across the state of Utah. Just about every square inch of Utah is photograph worthy. It was breathtaking, and maybe someday we'll even get to ski/snowboard it. That would make my year.

Oh Dam It: Hoover Dam Tour : I never thought I'd be so interested in learning about electricity and so many million cubic yards of concrete. It blows me away to think this masterpiece of engineering was built without the modern technologies we use today for construction. Plus it's funny to tell people you drove across that dam road.

The Stanley Hotel | Haunted Travels : I absolutely hate scary movies, but boy do I love a good ghost story. You'll hear plenty of ghost stories if you take the ghost tour at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. We thoroughly enjoyed walking the halls of the hotel that inspired Stephen King to write The Shining. It was so creepy and fun!

These are some of my favorite posts!
I hope you enjoy them too.

I Apologize

Dear Ashley,

We've had some good times... and some bad times too.
Mainly I'm here today to apologize for a few things on your behalf.

Sincerely,
Your Life.

- - : : - - : : - - : : - - : : - - : : - -

Don't take my Coca Cola!

First of all... sorry you felt the need to throw that poor girl's Barbie into the woods behind your baby sitter's house. I know she wouldn't let you play with it, but that was a rather drastic measure.

Sorry that few people knew much about sun protection during your years growing up in the summer sun on the lake. I'm also sorry you used tanning beds far too much, but I'm thankful you wear sunscreen like it's your job now.

I'm sorry you weren't very prepared for college and that you didn't try harder to figure out what you enjoyed doing the most. I'm still thankful you graduated with a college degree though.

Sorry that you helped yourself to soft serve ice cream probably every night for dinner in the dorm cafeteria. As much as you wish it was, ice cream is not a food group.

Seriously though, I'm really sorry you take your student loan debt to be the worst thing in the world. I can think of worse things.... say for instance, being homeless with no family. Practice gratitude.

Sorry that you had such terrible taste in (almost all) guys during your college years, but I'm not sorry that every past mistake led to your current husband. He's the best!

Mostly I'm sorry you ever let any fears get in your way, and I hope that you forge ahead without letting silly things get in the way! Keep on keepin' on.

. . . : : : : . . . : : : : . . . : : : : . . .

Have something that you're sorry for?

How Embarrassing!

I've had my fair share of embarrassing moments, and you can tell I'm embarrassed when my entire face turns red all the way to my ears. There is no way for me to hide it. However, I'm not all that easily embarrassed. I'm a goofball as it is and tend to embarrass myself (and sometimes those around me), so I'll most likely beat you to the punch. You must have something really good on me if you make my ears turn red.

I must have selective memory when it comes to the most embarrassing moments in my life, because I can't seem to think of any really embarrassing moments from my life... so I'll just go ahead and show you some of the embarrassing things I've done. These pictures will have to do.

Oh, and my husband reminded me there was this one time I took my dad to a cool new restaurant/pub in Denver, the Tilted Kilt. It sounded like a fun new Irish pub, so I thought why not try that out with my dad while he's in town. Well, that place is basically an Irish inspired Hooter's restaurant. Complete with scantily clad girls in tiny kilts. Not the kind of place I want to visit with my dad. Oops.

running down the dunes w/ my arms flailing like a crazy person... I almost peed myself that day

... try on that dive suit? Don't mind if I do.

... pretending to be on safari or something...

Oh, and then there was the time I told my father-in-law and his wife that eating too much asparagus made my pee smell badly. Who says that?! Yeah. I do just fine embarrassing myself.

What's your most embarrassing moment?

Blogging Makes Me Uncomfortable

So far I'm 3 for 3 posting for Jenni's Blog Every Day in May Challenge. I've never blogged every day in a month, so this will be quite the feat if I can actually do this. We'll see how I feel after a couple of weeks. Alright, now for day 3.... things that make you uncomfortable.

It took me a while to think of something that makes me truly uncomfortable. Not because nothing makes me uncomfortable. "Au contraire, mon frรจre!" There's a decent sized list of things that make me anxious, but it was tough thinking of something that makes me truly uncomfortable. I love using humor to diffuse nerve-racking situations, but this time I wanted to be honest instead of funny.

After coming up with heaps of things that make me only mildly uncomfortable, I realized the thought of sharing my life with a bunch of strangers on the Internet freaks me out. It's a nice little catch 22, because blogging is about sharing your life. However, I don't always want to share for fear of not being liked.

You're probably wondering why I even bother with blogging if sharing with strangers makes me squirm. Sometimes I wonder that same thing too, but sometimes we need to force ourselves to do things outside of our comfort zone. As cheesy as this sounds, there have been plenty of times in my life where doing the uncomfortable led to a great breakthrough and personal growth.

I'm definitely guilty of not sharing everything on this blog. The funny thing is, all the blogs I love the most share everything. It's a nice little catch 22. Now I'm a total goofball, but usually only my close family and friends get to see that side of me. Letting everyone see who I really am makes me plenty uncomfortable. Over the years though, I am learning to worry less about what others think of me. Maybe blogging has helped me at least a little. I suppose it's not all for naught.

I hope you'll like the nerd I am, and if not... that's okay too. Once a nerd, always a nerd.

Blog Every Day In May!

I'm sure you've already caught wind of Jenni's #BlogEveryDayInMay challenge, but if you're like me you probably found out in the most roundabout way long after everyone else already knew about it. Well isn't that just the story of my life. Earlier today I posted about the road trip my husband and I took a few weeks ago, but I found out about this challenge after the fact. So here goes nothing.

My Life in (Hopefully) 250 Words or Less

My name is Ashley. I was born in Texas and grew up in beautiful northern Michigan. My parents never had any other children, so I learned to entertain myself from a young age. You could find me building cities out of legos, tunneling through snowbanks, and swimming in the lake all summer long. I'm a self proclaimed dork, and I diffuse nervous situations with humor.

Middle school brought on that awkward phase. I immersed myself in learning and playing the saxophone in band. Volleyball eventually became one of my biggest loves. Senior year, I graduated as valedictorian of my class. After high school, I went off to college and earned an architecture degree. I found myself wanting something different and drove off to Colorado with my belongings in the back of my Jeep.

I met my husband in Colorado. We enjoyed living in Denver as young 20-somethings. I worked for an architecture firm, and my husband flew for a regional airline. The economy tanked, and my architecture job didn't stick around for long. I found myself frustrated with our mountains of debt and no job, but isn't that the way life works.

We moved to Florida when my husband was hired by a different airline. Together we're learning to be content with what we have, what the heck love really looks like, and trying to learn from our mistakes. All I know is that life is crazy, fun, exciting, and you must be kind to yourself... and others.

Confessions

You guys, I've got some things I need to confess.

I'm terrible at keeping in touch long distance. Thankfully I have some really great friends who always welcome me with open arms when we finally do reconnect. I wish that I called people as often as I thought about them, but I'm not sure there would ever be enough time for that. Thankfully our new iPhones make it a little easier to keep in touch!

Blog Lovin' confuses the heck out of me. You guys! How did you learn to use this? I imported the blogs I follow through Google friend connect, and somehow I'm still finding that some of my very favorite blogs are not being followed in Blog Lovin'. This is such a learning process for me. Sometimes I think social media is personally out there to confuse me.

Last week I was pulled over at 12am. I was driving back from Disney World with a friend who was visiting from Colorado, and we got pulled over about a half mile from my apartment. I've only been pulled over by the cops twice in my life. Both were for the same thing. My license plate light was burned out, and both times resulted in a warning. Thank goodness.

Creativity runs through my veins. There is nothing I love more than art, music, dance, photography... basically anything artistic. Art was always one of my favorite subjects in school. Back in middle school I played the saxophone in band. I graduated from college with an architecture degree. Lately I've been spending quite a bit of time painting. I often dream about making a living, or least a little cash, from my creative endeavors.

We went on a road trip earlier this month. I cannot believe I haven't even shared a single photo from our trip. My grandpa gave us his car, so we flew to Michigan and drove it back to Florida. My husband and I both saw plenty of new states. I spent some time browsing one of the biggest Christmas stores ever, and we enjoyed a few hours in Savannah, Georgia. I swear one of these days I'll share pictures and stories.

I miss Colorado way too much. Unfortunately, missing the last state we lived in, and the people in it, doesn't help me or my husband to be more content in Florida. This whole moving thing is really harder than I ever thought it would be. Living in Florida is teaching my husband and I both to expand outside of our comfort zones and also to depend more on each other rather than doing things our own way. Sometimes our plan isn't always the best one. Have you read Michelle's post about this?

The power went out while I was writing this. Last night we got a nice big Florida thunderstorm complete with a little bit of hail. The storms here are way less scary than the thunderstorms that built up over the Rocky Mountains, but they seem to bring much more rain than we're used to seeing. Maybe this will subdue the pollen that's attacking my sinuses. One can hope.

rainy Florida evening

Life With a Smartphone

Oh, hi there. It's been a few days. Last week my husband and I took part in an impromptu road trip from Michigan to Florida. That drive took us off the grid for a few days, and we found ourselves wishing we had purchased smart phones before the trip. We navigated old school style (maps from gas stations and all). How have we gone all these years without smart phones! #aintnobodygottimeforthat

Fortunately, after our adventurous road trip, we didn't go much longer before buying smart phones. You're talking to the proud new first-time owner of a smart phone here. My husband and I both chose the iPhone 5, and we're enjoying every second of owning smartphones for the first time. Does the novelty ever wear off? I'm a little afraid.

For now you can find me on Instagram sharing photos like this one........

{ what is happening to my hair here?! }

and this one........

{ gratuitous outfit of the day shots }

Some of you have already noticed, but I finally got signed up for Instagram. Come find me there! My name is AshJDub. I also added an Instagram button to my social media bar under my headshot, so you can always link to me from there too. I'm pretty excited to finally have an iPhone, but now I just have to learn how to use it now. :)

now come visit me on Instagram... are you on there?!

Birthday Eve of the Big Three-Oh

Well. Tomorrow I turn the big 3-0. Yipes! That number still sounds a little scary to me, but don't tell my husband that. He's been 30 something for a little bit now. I don't want to make him feel like an old man. A couple days ago he said that he doesn't want to be married to a 20-something anymore. Lucky for me, I'll fit the bill tomorrow. Whew. Thankfully he wasn't trying to leave me and was only hinting at the fact that he's okay with my age. I think I've got a keeper. :)

I guess I'm probably not going to meet that silly goal, that everyone and their brother sister sets, of having kids before I turn thirty. Unless the gestation period for a human pregnancy has been shortened from 9 months to a few hours. Ready, set, go. Nope. Not pregnant. We're still not homeowners either. You know what though, I couldn't be happier be turning 30 surrounded by lots of people who love me. That will have to be enough for now. Life never seems to go according to my plans anyhow. It's probably better that way.

Speaking of plans. Someone made plans for my big birthday this year. Plans that involved some sneakiness, and also plans that involve some cold temperatures and snow. I was notified of these plans only a few days ago, and now I couldn't be more excited to be leaving my twenties. Getting older is always more fun with people you love. Now let's hope mother nature doesn't play any games and that these plans do come to fruition.

Goodbye January, it's been nice knowing you!

I'm Just a Regular Kind of Girl

Many of you may not know the real me.
Well, all you really need to know is that I'm pretty much a regular girl.

You know...
I'm just the kind of girl who wears ski goggles while cooking...

... hand sculpts butter into the shape of animals for holiday dinners ...

... rock climbs in people's basements ...

... wears necklaces made of pretzels and nutter butter cookies ...

... sports antlers on occasion ...

... isn't afraid to wear an old fashioned diving suit in public ...

... can sometimes be seen sparkling like a vampire in the sun ...

... and regularly reads only the finest of reading material.

Yep. That's me.
A regular, normal kind of girl.

p.s. Did anyone notice that all of these pictures were taken before I cut off all my hair?
I don't have many weird photos of me with short hair...
I'm beginning to wonder if getting my hair cut made me less strange?

Guess I'll have to grow my hair long again! (:

Feeling Ambitious & Misunderstood

Feeling ambitious has nothing to do with deep cleaning the toilet today, although that is certainly ambition driven, but it has more to do with me really wanting to update my blog and let you all know a little bit more about me. I can definitely be a private person, although having a blog may not seem very private, but it's more so that I don't always reveal a lot of my personality on here. Sometimes I find it difficult letting you know who I am through a blog. All I can do is write words, which aren't always eloquent, and hope that you get the right idea. The tough thing is, I don't always feel I come across the way I'd like. Just like I can be very shy when first meeting someone, my family and good friends know that is anything but true.

What I'm trying to say is that I've made a few updates to my blog this week. I updated the travel page, and I also added a page called Fly World. You will now find plenty of links to blog posts about some of our travels, and my new Fly World page includes peeks into what it's like being married to a commercial pilot. If you're interested, I also included quite a few links to other bloggers who give their insight to the 'fly world' as well. I hope you will take the time getting to know me, and I hope to know you better too!

Alamosa, Colorado: climbing a giant sand dune during our trip... that's ambition

My mind constantly reels with thoughts, ideas, and all sorts of things in between. I often say I should carry a voice recorder, because some of my best, and often funniest, thoughts come at the most random of times. I'll spout something funny off while eating dinner with family, or I'll make people laugh while waiting in line at the store. I never know when the best thought will appear, and I feel that this blog is often a dumping ground for some of my most boring or worst thoughts. Don't get me wrong, every once in a while I have a great thought, I attempt sharing it, and get little to no feedback on this blog. I'm not here solely for the comments, but it is nice knowing that someone out there gets what you have said. I hope to whittle down my thoughts, and maybe someday this blog will be a little more focused, honest, and truthful.

I appreciate every single person who visits my blog, leaves comments, and I especially love getting to know you all. I may not always email back after reading your comment, but please know that I appreciate each and every one of them. I often struggle with balancing, life and blog, so there are times when I'll go stretches of days without reading or writing any blog posts at all. That doesn't mean I don't care. I promise you that. I'm unfortunately one of those people who often cares too much what others think, something which I am working on fixing. Like I always say, I know I'm far from perfect.

Thanks again to all of my readers! If you read this and I haven't heard from you, I would love to know you're there. I hope you'll take a little time reading some of my updates.

Happy weekend to you!

I suppose I'm also a bit ambitious for posting twice today.
Check out my earlier post from today about what I'd wear for a road trip.

My Evolution in Cooking { A Short Story}

Let's be honest. Cooking used to downright scare me. I mean a lot of things scared me when I was young, but thinking of myself as a cook in the kitchen gave me the chills. I never really thought I'd be able to do it. That might sound silly to some of you who were raised in a kitchen or had the cooking gene from birth, but my love for cooking has evolved over time. Aged like a fine wine, I like to think my cooking only gets better and more refined with time.

I was one of those kids who was terrified to make a mistake, who only raised my hand when I knew the answer, which was often because I made darn sure I knew the answers, and not having the answers scared me. It still scares me to not have the answers, but I'm getting better about that. Enter cooking in the kitchen. I thought a recipe was something that had to be followed exactly or you would run the risk of blowing up the oven. Okay that may be a slight exaggeration, but coming from someone who felt at home in the high school chemistry lab, you can see where the idea of making a mistake and exploding something comes from. I was scared of the kitchen. Sort of like I was scared of the chemistry lab but in a good way, because I usually aced my chemistry exams. Enter my sort of unhealthy need to be the best at every single thing I do. If I couldn't be the best I didn't really want to do it. Hence why I didn't cook much growing up.

College was a time of fear and uncertainty. Again, I'm very good at being dramatic when necessary for effect. I began learning to cook in college, because I needed to eat. See how that works? Sometimes when we need to do something we do it. I had my mom and dad making delicious meals for me most of my life, and I let them. It was a purely selfish way to think about food. In college, I learned to cook some things or starve. Fear has a funny way of making you do things you didn't think you could do. So I started cooking for myself in college. I became more certain that I could saute a mean frozen pierogi from Trader Joe's in Ann Arbor, and I also made a mean stir fry from the frozen food aisle. Hey, we all have to start somewhere.

{ Sandwiches and Harry Potter for dinner? Don't mind if I do. }

After graduating college, I moved in with family in Colorado. That helped my cooking skills tremendously, because my aunt seemed to be one of those people who was born with the cooking skills of a world class chef. Funny how we talk ourselves out of doing things because we think others are born with certain skills. Fortunately, she reminded me that good cooking comes with age, experience, and lots of messed up meals along the way. It was okay to make mistakes in the kitchen. Sometimes failing is the only way to learn. What a novel idea that seemed. I thank my aunt for being such a confident cook but also reminding me that she messed up meals too.

I finally moved in to an apartment with another Michigan alum, and she was not much of a cook. Let's be honest, she quite often called a bowl of cereal dinner. Who hasn't done that though? She was blessed with the baking gene, and I didn't seem to have a single bit of baker in me. She was thrilled to get a KitchenAid stand mixer for Christmas, but I just couldn't share the same enthusiasm because baking scared me. I had flashbacks of high school chemistry lab, and I kept think about an exploding kitchen. However, cooking a nice meal didn't seem to scare me quite as badly as it scared my roommate. We all have different abilities in the kitchen depending on how badly we want to eat a certain food. I knew I didn't want to live off of ramen for the rest of my life, so I learned to boil, saute, and bake things.

Enter my future husband (now my only and current husband). I would cook dinner for the two of us, because honestly I was just a better cook at that time. He ruled the grill, and that terrified me. I ruled the refrigerator, sink, stove, and oven. We ate things like baked chicken, lasagna, stuffed shell pasta, and pancakes. There were definitely burned meals and dried out chicken, but I was learning and growing more confident in the kitchen. Win, win.

{ see... cooking can be fun! }

Marriage was not all about burned meals, because I had tried to get that out of my system before terrifying my man completely. I tried my best to burn meals when I was cooking only for myself. With a husband who's a pilot, it was easy cooking for myself when he was gone. It was the best, and least embarrassing, way for me to learn. My dad came to visit one Thanksgiving, and I made almost all of the food by myself. That's right. All alone. It was a nice confidence boost, but it still freaks me out that I actually did that. I haven't done it again since.

{ I made all of this with a little help from my husband and father }

I'm actually to the point in my cooking evolution where I amaze my husband, and that's kind of cool. He'll exclaim things like "these are just as good as the pancakes at Snooze!" I'll respond by telling him he's crazy and that no one can make pancakes that delicious. My husband also looks at me like I just parted the Red Sea when I cook something without a recipe. That's something I never would have done in my fearful days of a chemist's approach to cooking. Heck, now I'll even modify a recipe to our tastes. I've learned that a recipe is more like a guideline, but you need to cook often in order to find out what you'd like to change about a meal.

I'm still absolutely terrified to cook for guests. I stick to the few things I'm most confident in making, but I always sweat a little when I know someone besides me or my husband will be eating my food. My fear of being judged by others comes rushing in, and I'll wonder if my meals will turn out or if they'll think I'm a dummy in the kitchen, or worse, maybe I will blow something up while they're watching. That still scares the bejeezus out of me.

{ steamed mussels would have scared me years ago }

My husband and I are actually at a point now where we don't even enjoy going out to eat, because most of the food I make at home is better than what we can get at a restaurant. I'm not saying that to make myself sound like an incredible chef, but it goes to show you we just don't have great food offerings here in the Tampa Bay area. Now if we still lived in Denver that would be a different story, because I can still eat at Vesta Dipping Grill and have the socks blown off my feet. We are still searching for a Tampa Bay restaurant that knocks our socks off.

Every day I'm learning to grow more confident in the kitchen. Not to mention, I am not afraid to put pumpkin in my pancakes these days. See what a little time, a whole lot of burned meals, people who believe in you, and some successful dishes will do to a person. Some day maybe I'll even learn to be successful at baking from scratch. Who knows maybe I'll give grilling a try, or I'll just leave that to my husband. I'm not sure there's room for two grill masters in the family.

Our Anniversary and This Busy Life

Over a week has gone by since I last posted a blog, and a lot has happened since then.
Sorry for not responding to your comments! I'll try getting back to you eventually.

This month has already been pretty great!
{ I may be a bit biased, but I just love February because it is the month
that holds my birthday and our wedding anniversary }

Two years ago I married my best friend....
photography by Alison Rose Photography in Denver, Colorado

I don't think I can cover everything in one blog post,
but I figured the best way to catch you up is to start somewhere.

So here are a few things that we have been
up to over the past few weeks:

* someone {that would be me} had a birthday
come back tomorrow for some birthday humor

* we attended ICE in Orlando
more on this later... with videos of ice slides
I promise it's cool {pun intended}

* I found a fun new nail polish idea
you can find a tutorial for this here

I know there has been lots more in between,
but I might have to tell you all about it at a later date!

Happy Monday!

I Dig Your Blog

Fellow pilot wife, Joanna, passed along the "I Dig Your Blog" award to me recently. You can read about her experiences as a mother and pilot wife over at Daddy... Daddy, come back! Thanks for choosing me, Joanna. Now... are you all ready for some randomness?

The rules of this award are to share 3 random facts about yourself,
and then pass the award along to 5 other bloggers.

Here are a few random facts about me:

1. I've visited 26 out of 50 states in the United States, and I hope to see them all some day. (I really need to update my travel map). The northwest and northeast are two parts of the country I have still never seen. I still think that northern Michigan (where I grew up) is one of the most beautiful places I have seen so far. If you want to know more just ask me! (Switzerland is pretty beautiful too, but that's a whole other blog post.)  I want to see the world, and my dream job would involve travel and writing about travel.

* here's a photo of the lake where I grew up in Michigan *

2. When I was in 8th grade, I broke my ankle while on a field trip to an amusement park/water park. After going on a few rides in the amusement park, I went with some friends to the water park where I broke my ankle on the first slide we went down. It was still one of the most painful things I've experienced yet! (No we don't have children yet.) I was escorted out of the water park on a golf cart, and everyone stared at me. It was incredibly embarrassing. One of my teachers drove me to a local clinic where they x-rayed my ankle and told me that I would most likely need surgery. The biggest perk of breaking my ankle was that I didn't have to ride the bus home. One of my teachers drove me home in the back of her station wagon, and she bought me a Snickers and fast food on the way home. I ended up having surgery and spending most of my summer in casts, and I'm pretty sure that my left leg is still slightly smaller than my right because of it. Yup.

* if you look closely you can see my super white leg just above my air cast/sock... cool, huh? *

3. I am an only child. Yes, you read that correctly. I have no brothers or sisters. At times I wish that I had siblings, but sometimes (mostly when I hear about how siblings fight and hate each other) I think it's pretty nice being an only child. I never had to share my parents either, so that was pretty cool. Everyone knows that only children stink at sharing. However, there are times when my dad and his brothers, or my mom and her sister, get together and share memories of growing up that I feel like I missed out on a special bond. I suppose that's partly why I loved our golden retriever, Gnomie, so much! She was my dog sister. Don't judge me. We all know that dogs make better listeners than humans do anyways.

* me, my grandparents, and my 'sister' *
(just in case you can't tell us apart, I'm the one with the monster feet slippers on)

So there you have it.
Hopefully you learned at least one new thing about me!

This is the part where I choose 5 bloggers and tell them: "I Dig Your Blog"

Hopefully you learned some useless incredibly useful and random things about me,
but now it's time to learn about some other bloggers!

I am passing this award along to:

Now go and check out
these lovely blog friends!
